In addition to the tools of grant making, research and advocacy, we seek to seize new opportunities and deploy novel tools such as arts and culture, technology, strategic litigation and impact investment to address open society challenges. OSF-Africa supports innovative interventions with effective strategies that respond to the broader deep-seated political, justice and socio-economic roadblocks to open society in Africa. Familiarity with social networks and digital tools for journalism, preferably with some expertise in software development.Good understanding of business management and finances, preferably of media organizations.Extensive experience as a journalist or editor, an entrepreneur in new journalism ventures or as an innovator in news organizations.
Master’s degree, preferably in journalism.Having responsibility for strengthening connections between Open Society Foundations’ geographic and thematic programs consistent with Open Society Foundations’ broader priorities, identifying opportunities where a shared approach might have the potential to create a broader impact.Guiding the work of program and/or administrative staff in support of grant-making or other program activities.Continuously scoping and researching the field of journalism to identify trends and ways in which news organizations and initiatives are addressing challenges and increasing their reach.Managing projects that include staff within/outside Open Society Foundations and that may be regional or global.Participating in the development of overall program strategy and may also conduct research to support program design.Developing collaborative relations inside and outside Open Society Foundations (e.g., with existing grantees, prospective grantees, media experts, etc.) that advance the growth of independent, resilient journalist initiatives and news organizations.Building collaborative relationships with grantees and prospective grantees in order to manage the grants, sharing knowledge of the field and being a resource for them in their effort to reach their goals.Working within the broader program strategy design, makes and assesses grants and makes use of other appropriate tools for advancing goals.Operating with considerable autonomy and having responsibility for all grant-making activities relating to the growth and development of journalist initiatives and news organizations of the Opening Journalism portfolio within an approved budget reflective of his/her field experience and expertise.The Program Officer will perform the following functions. OSF works to build vibrant and tolerant societies whose governments are accountable and open to the participation of all people.
